McGraw Hill Construction recently awarded the University of Texas Darrell K. Royal Memorial Stadium North End Zone Expansion the National Best of the Best Award in the Sports and Recreation category. The North End Zone Expansion took 26 months to construct, and includes the impressive addition of one million square feet, 11 levels, 15,000 new seats, and 47 luxury boxes. Much of the original North End Zone was demolished. Foundation upgrades were required for the remaining structure and parts of the new construction were built over existing elements. the finished design melds new and old construction seamlessly.
The stadium super-structure consists of concrete cast-in-place beams, rakers, and columns with in-fill precast seating for the stands, and pan formed beams at the concourses. The foundation is slab-on-grade with the columns founded on straight-sided deep pilled piers.
