The City of Houston
Houston, Texas
With an additional 19,000 square feet, the new Kendall Library and Community Center has expanded its capacity to 28,000 square feet. Included are classrooms, meeting rooms and a gymnasium to meet the needs of the community. The Library is also the first three-story neighborhood library in the Houston System, and offers the first convenient drive-thru window. It has been awarded Silver Certification by the USBCG (United Green Building Institute).
Super-structure framing for the library was designed using a combination of steel braced and moment frames. The second and third floors are composite concrete and steel framing, with steel framed appendages cantilevered out from the second floor. The roof is framed with steel beams an open web joists supporting a metal roof deck, and the foundation for the super-structure consists of slab-on-grade with perimeters grade beams and drilled and under-reamed footings below the columns.
