Continental Airlines
George Bush Intercontinental Airport, Houston, Texas
Continental Airlines introduced its new B-Check hangar, large enough to provide maintenance support requirements and for housing a Boeing 777. The hangar clear spans 223 feet and is 233 feet in length. It is also equipped with a new A-FFF fire protection system, hung from the super-structure, and capable of producing enough foam to fill the 52,000 square foot facility at the rate of 3 feet in height per minute.
The super-structure was designed and constructed with steel truss framing and braced frames, and is clad with metal building panels. The foundation consists of a 12 inch thick slab-on-grade with deep, straight sided piers at each column. An existing slab-on-grade at the site was incorporated into the design to minimize the demolition and to maximize the efficiency of the design.
