Alkek Tower Expansion

University of Texas / M.D. Anderson Cancer Center

Houston, Texas

Located in the Texas Medical Center Complex, this 495,000 square foot expansion to the University of Texas / M.D. Anderson Margaret M. Alkek tower adds 12 additional floors atop the existing 12 story hospital tower, and offers a beacon of hope to cancer patients worldwide. The construction cost is $220 million, with a completion date scheduled for the second quarter of 2010.

The building structure consists of both cast in place concrete and composite steel framing. One of the many structural challenges was to verify capacity of the existing tower for support of 12 additional floor levels in lieu of the original design for 10.
